Ever come across a friend or family member who was screwing up their leadership? It usually happens about 18 months into their role. By that time the honeymoon is over and they start clashing with employees and colleagues.
You might not notice it at first. They stopped talking about work as much lately, but something happened and they need to vent.
You listen as they complain about how people have become incompetent, aren’t taking direction, and seem to have become stupid overnight. You know, it’s *possible* those things may be true, and you want to be supportive, but … it sure does sound like they’re whining.
They are likely under pressure, questioning themselves, feeling a lot of uncertainty, but are trying to hide it behind bravado. That’s the wrong tactic and if they proceed, they risk becoming a lousy leader.
Friends don’t let friends become lousy leaders. You’ve got an opportunity to talk some sense into them. Don’t squander the trust. Show them some tough love and encouragement. If you need help, reach out to us.
