Most people agree that 2020 has been a dumpster fire of a year. From the COVID-19 pandemic, economic hardships, devastating natural and societal storms, autocrats making their moves across the globe, and the emotional and physical divisions that are negatively affecting family, friends, and mental health.
We could argue over whether we are in unprecedented times or just ignoring history, but there has been enough arguing. While it can be aggravating to witness so many people disregarding common sense for political gain, it is equally hard to observe the number of people so lost that they have given up. They consider it a failed year and want a redo. They have thrown up their hands and hid beneath the covers, immobilized by anxiety or depression.
While everyone has a different approach, I would like you to think about the challenges, the heartbreak, and the anger we are coping with and living through during this unrest. Everyone has a different story and their unique way of tackling what’s before us. Yet, in this rare time in human history, we are doing this together.
During times like these, the world demands brave, powerful, and communicative leaders. People who are strong enough to live according to their values and dig deep for inspiration, passion, and purpose. I urge you to be one of those leaders.
Your time to step up and be a better version of yourself is now; this is the time to speak up instead of letting things fester, challenge yourself, inspire and aid others, wrestle the numerous obstacles, retain your dignity, and act with purpose. This year and the ones beyond will continue to challenge humanity. Though daunting, that is not sufficient cause to give up; it is a call to be braver and more durable. Work toward unity and continue to strengthen your resolve.
You’ve got this; we’ve got this together. No one is in this alone.
I believe, despite how it can feel, the challenges of this year are making us better. They are making us stronger. Think about how powerful you are going to be on the other side of this. Think of the stories you are going to tell to future generations. Retain control of how you think, feel, and behave. Do not offload these rights to others. Tenaciously make the best of your circumstances, and become the courageous leader others around you need.
This year can defeat you if you let. Instead, be a happy warrior and part of the team that grins and declares, “We ain’t gonna let it.”
You’re beautiful. You’re powerful. You’re strong — 2020 STRONG.
