I never liked the term emerging leader. It’s like calling a woman who’s pregnant an emerging mother. It’s clunky, vague and rude. I accept that leadership is a continuum, but it’s not based on time, it’s based on effectiveness.
How do you increase your effectiveness? Ask for feedback from a knowledgable source, process it, and then applying what’s most valuable.
Here are three sample questions to ask regardless of where you are on the continuum.
- How could I improve?
- What am I doing that I’m not aware of?
- What am I not doing that I ought to consider?
Being defensive or disagreeable with the answers won’t help you. Being open to a discussion will.
